24 Inches of New Snow @ Berkshire East?!?

It was an epic day today for everybody at the Beast today. The snow was a little heavy but by an large we all had a blast and the skiing was excellent. I had the chance to take about 6 runs and people were hooting and hollering for most of the time I was on the lift. Best runs for my group was skiing the Jug and a couple of other natural snow trails that really come to life on a powder day.

Plan ahead, the national weather service is calling for more heavy snow on the eastern slopes of the Berkshires tomorrow (thursday) and with the base layer down today, tomorrow could be even more epic. Check back in for more updates.

Berkshire East ( 413- 339- 6617; www. berkshireeast. com) in Charlemont is primarily a " local" ski hill - which means lots of people drive right past it coming up I- 91 on their way to Vermont. But I have to tell you it ranks high up on my list of best ski areas you've probably never visited. It's got almost 1,200 feet of vertical, a quad, two triples, a double, and two small surface lifts. They've also got 45 trails ( we skied most of them), some of then twisty and some of them steep, plus a few wide- open slopes to play on.

Honestly, what more do you need for a day or a weekend of fun?

Answer: snow!

On the day we visited (Superbowl Sunday), they had snow. Quite a bit of it, actually. No, the entire area wasn't open, and no, they didn't have quite enough snow to explore the glades, but they certainly had plenty of soft, groomed snow on the trails.

We found one little patch of hard-crusted snow that the groomers somehow missed hidden away on a trail. But the rest of place was soft and inviting.

And, best of all, there was NO ONE there.

That's right. On a beautiful sunny Sunday, we never waited at all to get on a chairlift and head for the top. From what I hear, both nearby Jiminy Peak and Mount Snow were far more jam- packed with people that weekend. Sure, those are more famous and have more trails, more and faster lifts and bigger base lodges to spread out more people, but there's something awfully nice about being able to find untracked corduroy on the edges of a trail at 11 o'clock on a Sunday morning.

Seriously, the next time you're traveling on I91, take your skis or your board along. Detour about 20 minutes west on Route 2. You'll find a wonderful not- so- little hill for skiers and riders.

Your friends will look at you funny when you tell them you discovered a hidden gem called Berkshire East. The smart ones will ask you how to get there.

Jim and Jon Schaefer were the two forerunners for the second run of the Seibert Cup- a JI and JII USSA Event Held at the Mt. today. Rumor has it that the older brother still "has it" as he clipped the younger brother by .10 sec.

New Mt. Top Triple

It is now OPEN!

We are very excited to announce, after many unforeseen delays in the construction process, the New Mt. Top Triple is running. This new life offers some outstanding views and a great new way to the summit. This lift has made it journey from New Mexico and now has found its new home in place of the "old black double". We are excited of the many ways that this lift will add to the ski area and minimize any wait in the Base Area. The unloading ramp is located in a perfect position to have access to all the trails on the mountain. We are so excited to have this life on line and we know that all of our guest will enjoy this new addition to the ski area.

New Triple Chair Update!

Light at the End of the Tunnel

After several unforeseen and unfortunate delays, the Ski Resort is hopeful that the New Mt. Top Triple chair lift will be open by Wed. Jan. 13th. Our Mt. Operations team is diligently completing the final tasks, including the attachment of the safety bars. There will be a load test and a full inspection at the start of next week and then we hope to have the lift operational by Wednesday morning.

We have been disappointed by the several delays in the construction of this project, however we are so excited for the value that we know that will added to the Resort. Skiers and Riders will exit the lift at the summit and have access to the entire mountain's terrain. It will also greatly improve the uphill capacity and should drastically decrease any wait time in the base area. We all at Berkshire East are sorry for the delays and want to thank all of our patrons for their patience through out this past month.

Good morning and welcome to Berkshire East ;
   Base Lodge Request:
   Berkshire East is requesting that all racers and parents bring their gear to the 2nd floor of the lodge. I am sure you are aware that most ski areas have space problems in their base lodges on weekends. We would like to keep the 1st floor tables open for cafeteria customers through the day. So, if you are in for lunch please feel welcome to use our 1st floor facility. If you are in to warmup or spend a long period of time please use the upstairs area. If it appears you have been ‘camped out’ on the 1st floor for a long time and the lodge is busy you may be asked to move. Thank you for your cooperation.
The Technical Delegate for today is Jack Shea.
You can find your race results on the Tri-State Website.
Today’s race is 2 runs of Giant Slalom on a rotated seeding basis as: A,B,C,D and B,C,D,A. The seeded groups will run thus: J-5 Girls, J-5 Boys, J-4 Girls, J-4 Boys,
J-3 Girls and J-3 Boys.
Course Inspection instructions will be announced at registration.
This race will be governed by USSA rules where applicable. It is the responsibility of competitors and coaches to know these rules. Judgments will be made by a jury
appointed at the coaches' meeting. All questions and protests must immediately be
brought to the attention of a jury member.
   Jury members are the Technical Delegate, Referee and Chief of Race.
Remember - A gatejudge can not award a re-run; only a jury member!
All competitors are asked to stick lift tickets to elastic band of goggles in order to be able to get on the lift after a run.
   Competitors who are late for their starts will be given a provisional run which goes to Jury.
   Helmets are required according to USSA rules.
All notices, times and Dsq's will be posted on the scoreboard of the race building.
   Coaches should pay close attention to the list of disqualifications after each run. This could
seriously affect your racer and his/her standing. All scoreboard data is unofficial
until after the protest period has expired.
   The protest period will be 15 minutes. A protest requires a $25 fee.

Sportsmanship : The USSA and Tri-State would like for your #1 priority at this
   event to be one of commitment to "fair play, ethical behavior and integrity."

Hanging Chairs

As many of you know, we are putting in a new triple chair lift but unfortunately, there has been a delay. We had hoped to have this chair operational by the Holiday Week, but due to a delivery delay, we are about a week behind schedule. Our Mt. Operations team is hard at work today hanging chairs in the snow. This is a very exciting process to see and it is bring us closer to an open date for the chair. We hope to have the chair open just after the New Year. This new Diamond Summit Triple will bring riders to the very top of the mountain. All riders will have a wider selection of terrain as the lifts terminates at the start of the Outback trail.

Schaefer Cup

This Sunday will be an exciting day for the mountain as we host the 32nd Annual Schaefer Cup Slalom. This race is appropriately named after the Schaefer Family for all that they have done for the Ski Racing world over the past three decades. This premier race will showcase some of the most competitive J I / J II USSA Racers in the region. The first run will begin at 9:30 AM on Competition.

The mountain had two inches of snow today and the rain held off. The packed powder snow conditions were fantastic and it turned out to be a great day. There rain in the forecast for this evening but our groomers are ready have the hill in excellent shape for Sunday. The base depths on our open trails are outstanding so the poor weather will do little to interrupt the great conditions.
