Progress Continues on the Wind Tower

Leigh Heffernan

Right now the turbine is somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic!  It left from Hamburg, Germany on September 19th and it is expected to arrive in Charlemont on October 24th.

As you can imagine it has been pretty busy around here.  Getting a giant wind turbine on the top of our mountain is not an easy thing.   We have been doing a lot of blasting to prepare the site, and we have also been making a lot of improvements to our road to make sure that the trucks will be able to get the turbine to the top.   In the next few days we will begin to pour the footing.

Some Wind Turbine Facts:

  • It is a PowerWind 56
  • It will produce 900 kW of energy providing over 130% our need
  • The main drive hub is located 177 feet above the ground
  • Each of the rotator blades is 84 feet in length, and when the tip is at the highest point it is 261 feet above the ground

Check back, we will have more news and site photos soon!
